Deforestation is the practice of cutting down trees and leaving behind an open wasteland. Deforestation can happen on several different scales. It could be anything from illegal squatting or can be massive industrial deforestation where lumber companies bring advanced technology and heavy machinery to cut down trees within a short period of time.
Deforestation is most common in countries like US, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia and Russia. There are various causes of deforestation. They include;
Commercial logging: This involves harvesting of timber for wood production. It serves people’s needs for projects using wood.
Industrial Uses: Involves chopping down forests in order to build factories or residential areas.
Agriculture: This is cutting down of trees in order to grow crops like wheat, maize, palm oil plantations etc.
Livestock: In countries like Brazil or Indonesia, deforestation is caused by farmers clearing land for their livestock.
How Deforestation Affects the Environment
We all know that trees absorb carbon dioxide. Human beings also put out more and more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. When lumber companies cut down trees, we hinder the ability of the planet to balance the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Cutting down our forests will also reduce the habitat for wild animals and birds to live in. Every year, there are over 1000 different species that go extinct around the world. A big chunk of that happens because of deforestation. The only way to save these animals and our environment at large, is to stop deforestation.
Deforestation also leaves the balance of humanity and the planet poor and more impoverished. It is a short term economic “game” that benefits only a few individuals at the expense of many.
How To Stop Deforestation.
There are many ways to prevent deforestation in your area. You don’t necessarily need to live in a rainforest to help combat deforestation in your area. Here are some few suggestions to help you stop deforestation.
Reforestation is considered as the best way of fighting deforestation. Several lumber companies are going green and saving the environment by planting as many trees they can to compensate what they are cutting down. This measure should be implemented by the rest of us. The more we plant trees the better we will be in the near future.
Planting trees will also reduce soil erosion and improve the habitat of animals. The government should also set a requirement that will enable every citizen between the age of 10 to 60 to plant 2-5 trees every year. This will increase the amount of trees in one year by almost 1 billion.
2. Use Recycled Products
Today, a person can acquire different types of recycled products from shopping bags, books, toilet papers as well as notebook papers. When we use these recycled products and ensure they are not put to waste, the demand for the raw material to replace them will reduce significantly.
3. Use Coals Instead Of Firewood
Firewood is not always the best way to go. It can cause a lot of problems to your health and well-being. Using coal rather than firewood will help you in different ways. Using firewood will not put your health at risk, plus will help reduce the amount of trees being cut down for firewood.
Deforestation is a problem that affects the world at large. In order to save our environment and our generation, it is important to be accountable for any tree that we cut down. We need to plant as many trees as we can to prevent deforestation.
